Northstar with non-skiers: a two-day split itinerary

Half your group wants powder. The other half wants a hot tub, a walk, and lunch without rental boots. That is a normal Northstar trip, and it works if you stop forcing everyone onto the same schedule.

Stay at the Luxury Northstar Getaway on the Golf Course and the non-skiers already have a base: fairways out back, Tompkins Trail off the property, Village a short hop away, and the north shore of Tahoe about 15 minutes when traffic behaves. Give them one day close to the house and one day aimed at the lake. Skiers peel off in the morning. Everyone reconnects for dinner.

The short version: Day one stays local (Village, golf if it is open, Tompkins Trail, maybe a scenic lift). Day two picks one north-shore stop, not five. Winter swaps golf and beaches for skating and whatever else Northstar is actually running that week. Cross-country is a maybe right now. As of September 8, 2026, the resort hours page still shows the Cross-Country Center closed for the 2025–2026 season and does not list a 2026–2027 reopening. Check before you promise it.

Who this is for

Day one: Village, golf, Tompkins Trail

Start in the Village. Coffee, shops, a meal, and a fixed meet-up spot for the skiers when they come down. Summer hours for dining and retail change, so open Northstar’s current hours page rather than last year’s screenshot in a group chat.

In summer the golf course is the easy anchor: 18 holes, Robert Muir Graves design, tee times online or by phone up to 60 days out. Confirm rates and inventory for your dates. Not everyone needs a full round. Some people walk nine, some sit on the deck at the house and watch fairway traffic.

Non-golfers can leave the property straight onto Tompkins Trail for a walk or bike ride at their own pace. From the Village, watch the trail signs. Northstar marks some routes hiking-only and others biking-only. A scenic chairlift ride is the low-effort option when lifts are spinning; buy the right ticket and check that day’s schedule. Day two: one north-shore base, not a scavenger hunt

Northstar’s own sightseeing notes put Tahoe City about 15 minutes away in normal conditions and name several beaches near the resort, including North Tahoe Beach, Kings Beach State Recreation Area, Speedboat Beach, and Moon Dune Beach. Summer weekend traffic and winter weather both stretch that drive. Pick one base for the day.

Kings Beach State Recreation Area has shallower water that works for kids. North Tahoe Beach mixes sand, grass, picnic tables, and volleyball. Speedboat Beach is small, rocky, and fills up fast. TART can help, but only when the schedule matches your plan. Daytime trips between Northstar and the Kings Beach or Tahoe City zones are on fixed bus routes. TART Connect involving Northstar is limited to evening windows on the current page. It is not a full-day car replacement. Check the dated schedule for your trip.

Winter version: confirm before you sell it to the group chat

Official Northstar pages list Village ice skating and, depending on the season and events calendar, snow play, tubing, and snowshoe outings. Treat that list like a menu, not a contract. Open the hours page and events calendar close to arrival. Book anything ticketed before the skiers and non-skiers split for the day.

Cross-country needs a second look. The hours page still carries a closed notice for the 2025–2026 winter. Other marketing pages still talk about nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking. Until 2026–2027 hours are posted, do not build the itinerary around the Cross-Country Center.

If weather kills the outdoor plan, the Village hours page is the same-day source for dining, retail, skating, and movie times. Keep a house fallback too: media room, game room, hot tub, big kitchen. A closed trail should not turn into a lost afternoon.

Where you stay

The Luxury Northstar Getaway on the Golf Course at 210 Bitter Brush Way in Truckee sleeps up to 22 across seven bedrooms and six bathrooms. Skiers and non-skiers can disappear into different corners of the house and still end up at the same table. The home backs onto the golf course with mountain and fairway views from a large deck, plus direct Tompkins Trail access for hiking or biking without loading a car.

After the lake or the links, the hot tub, gas fireplace, and radiant floors make the evening easy. Game room, media room with projector, and Sonos cover a no-drive night. The chef’s kitchen, double oven, and wine fridge handle a full group dinner when nobody wants to fight for a Village table.

Is Northstar worth it if you do not ski?

Yes, if you plan by season. Summer has golf, hiking, Village food and shops, and scenic lifts when they run. Winter can include skating and other snow activities, but you need the current hours or events page for the week you are there.

How far is the north shore from Northstar?

Northstar’s sightseeing guide puts Tahoe City about 15 minutes out in ordinary conditions. Peak traffic, road work, snow, and chain controls can double that.

Can non-golfers leave straight from the house?
